SUMMARY:History Presentation World War II Longest Fight-Battle of the Atlantic TBM Flight Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Sponsored By \nApril 22\, 2023 \nDoors Open at 8am   Presentation at 9am \nRunning continuously from 1939 to 1945\, the Battle of the Atlantic was the longest continuous campaign of WWII.  It pitted German submarines\, warships and aircraft against Allied navies\, air forces\, and merchant shipping.  Convoys of cargo and troop ships navigating across the Atlantic from the United States to Britain and the Soviet Union were the targets. \nEarly on in the conflict\, German submarines attacked Allied shipping off the East Coast of the U.S. with great success.  The campaign took on the characteristics of a deadly chess game with each side making operational and technology moves to counter each other.  With new technology and abundant ships and aircraft the battle finally turned in favor of the Allies in 1943. \nFormer Navy SeaBee officer and museum docent John Lynch will describe this great battle and how close the Germans came to winning it.  He will focus on the special contributions of British and U.S. Navy escort carriers and their aircraft in the eventual victory.  The presentation will include a flight demonstration by one the museum’s TBM Avengers.
