SUMMARY:Special Event-Battle of the Bismarck Sea
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, March 20\, the museum will open early for a special presentation on the Battle of the Bismarck Sea.  This one-hour event will be held in the museum’s main pavilion beginning at 9am. \nAfter the December 7th\, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor\, the Japanese Army and Navy quickly overran the Southwest Pacific in their quest for oil and other natural resources and to shut off supply lines between the U.S. and Australia.  One of the focal points of the Japanese effort was New Guinea\, the largest of hundreds of islands located between Australia and the mainland of Southeast Asia.  The Battle of the Bismarck Sea was a turning point in the Allied effort to regain control of New Guinea.  This little-known air and sea battle not only turned the tide in New Guinea but opened the way for the liberation of the Philippines and the final push toward Japan. \nThe museum’s Curator and Historian\, Colonel Gene Pfeffer\, USAF (Retired) will tell the story of this important battle and discuss the aircraft that played a key role in the Allied victory.  Three of these aircraft types are on display at the museum. \nThe schedule for the event is as follows: \n8:30 am           Doors Open \n9:00 am           Presentation \n9:30 am           Q & A and Discussion \nFor more information contact the museum’s Front Desk at 719 637-7559.
