HISTORY PRESENTATION BOMBS, BOMBERS AND ARMAMENTS: LOWRY FIELD AND COLORADO’S COMMITMENT TO WWII

February 21

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21 2026

DOORS OPEN AT 9AM   PRESENTATION STARTS AT 10AM

America’s entry into World War II brought with it the commitment of the American people in a full and overwhelming way. Twelve million Americans served in uniform, backed by a herculean effort in the states that saw whole industries converted to wartime production and cities transformed into industrial hubs. Alongside the growth of wartime industry, many towns also witnessed burgeoning populations as they supported vital military training for the soldiers, airmen, sailors and marines.

Lowry Field in Denver provided training for WWII aircraft gunners, bombardiers, and armorers at its Armament School throughout the war. Men who trained at Lowry Army Airfield went on to fly in combat bomber crews over Europe, the Pacific, and North Africa. Among them were the men of the 310th Bombardment Group (Medium), a legacy unit to today’s 310th Space Wing stationed today in Colorado at Schriever Space Force Base. A look at the intensive training provided at Lowry Field with special emphasis on its graduates that went on to fly with the 310th in the North African and Italian campaigns demonstrated the commitment that Colorado had to the U.S. military in WWII.  That commitment continues today.

On Saturday, February 21st, 2026, at 10:00 am, historian Courtney Short will present the story of how Colorado supported the war effort.  She will focus on the training of members of the 310th Bomb Group (Medium) that flew the B-25 Mitchell bomber, like the museum’s own B-25, in the Mediterranean campaigns.  She will also discuss the successor unit, the 310thSpace Wing at Schriever Space Force Base near Colorado Springs.  Please join us for this interesting and informative presentation.
